Our Story
Street Food Australia began in 2018 as a passion project between three food enthusiasts who met at a bustling food market in Melbourne. What started as weekend adventures exploring local street vendors quickly grew into something much bigger than we ever imagined.
Our founder, Marcus Chen, was a food journalist who had spent years covering restaurant openings and fine dining establishments. But it was during a chance encounter with an elderly Greek vendor selling traditional souvlaki from a weathered food cart that he realized the real heart of Australian cuisine wasn't in fancy restaurants – it was on the streets, in the markets, and in the hands of passionate vendors who had been perfecting their craft for decades.
Joined by cultural anthropologist Sarah Mitchell and photographer Jake Thompson, we set out on a mission to document and celebrate the incredible diversity of Australia's street food scene. From the Vietnamese pho stalls of Cabramatta to the indigenous bush tucker experiences in Alice Springs, we've traveled over 50,000 kilometers across the continent, meeting vendors, tasting dishes, and sharing stories.
Today, Street Food Australia has become the country's most trusted source for authentic street food discoveries, helping food lovers find hidden gems and supporting local vendors who keep our culinary traditions alive. We've featured over 500 vendors, published thousands of reviews, and built a community of passionate food explorers who share our love for authentic, accessible cuisine.
